Murder in the Deep South

A tale of greed, distrust, and murder, "Deep South" by Nevada Barr is the eighth book of the series featuring Anna Pigeon, a National Park Ranger. This time around, Anna is the district ranger of the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi when a murder occurs in the parkway. As Anna attempts to solve the case, she finds herself facing several complications including Mississippi mud and kudzu.

I enjoyed the character descriptions, and soon came to enjoy the detailed descriptions of the Trace. The well-built suspense, the excellent weaving of red herrings throughout the tale, and the complex characters kept me reading although I had thought that the beginning of the book moved a bit slow. The first three chapters seemed to give the story an unequal feel compared to the fairly swift ending.

However, after I finished reading "Deep South," I wanted to read another of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon tales. The author succeeded in getting me hooked on the series with just this installment. "Deep South" was the first Nevada Barr novel that I had read, yet I was easily able to lose myself in the story without having read any of the past seven books featuring the park ranger.

Barr captured the good, the bad, and the beauty of not only Mississippi but also the Deep South as a whole. There were moments when I felt I was reading about the people, places, and situations that could very well happen in my own backyard as someone who lives in the Deep South.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and recommend the novel to other mystery and suspense readers. However, if you are a fan of crime fiction and happen to prefer stories that begin with a bang, or if you grow impatient with detailed descriptions, then you might not enjoy "Deep South." But, if you are willing to wait for the story's pace to pick up after the first couple of chapters, then I would recommend you take a chance on the book.
